Dow Chemical (Stade/Hamburg, Germany)

HTML

summary

At its production site near Hamburg, Dow operates a total of 16 factories that produce a variety of base and specialty chemicals based on salt chemistry. The factories demand the supply of process water and demi-water.

Evides Industriewater (through its subsidiary Evides Stade Wasserbetrieb GmbH) designed, engineered, constructed and financed (according to a long-term DBFO contract) a new demi-water plant that is fed with water from the nearby river Elbe (brackish water). This plant has been operated by Evides since its start-up in 2002 and integrated with the existing demi-water facility since.

outsourcing = partnership

The intensive and productive cooperation with respect to water treatment between Dow Chemical and Evides Industriewater at Dow's facilities in Terneuzen (The Netherlands) have lead to the request of Dow to Evides for its involvement at the modernisation, upgrading and extension program of the demi-water facilities at its Stade site.

After an extensive comparison of a number of concepts and technologies, Evides Industriewater conducted a study using a pilot plant at the Dow location in Stade. On the basis of its results, a choice was made for a robust and reliable solution using coagulation, sedimentation and filtration for the production of process water and an additional step of ion exchange technology for production of demi-water. Key issues were reliability and a guaranteed supply.

project details

The total annual capacity of the water treatment facilities after construction of the new plant is 5 million m3 of demi-water and an additional 2 million m3 of process-water.

The new plant has been designed in such a way that the varying composition of the raw Elbe water can be accomodated by the process (back-up: drinking water). The new design resulted in substantial savings (90% less drinking water), energy and chemicals. This not only resulted in cost savings but also in a vast contribution towards a reduced environmental footprint of this Dow facility.
