Rotterdam is the biggest refinery base in Europe. As a consequence of its excellent logistical position, this 2nd biggest port in the world now hosts all major chemical companies that use the refineries' output to produce a multitude of chemicals.
The water portfolio in this port includes all thinkable water qualities, from sprinkling water to cooling water, from process water to boiler-feed water. Evides Industriewater is the main water utilities company in the area, both supplying water as water utility or as the product of a tailor-made process plant (by means of DBFO contract).
Co-siting on this kind of mega-industrial parks is very common, meaning that the output of one company is the feed product of another. In the field of water the industry zone of the Rotterdam harbour boasts a piping network for demineralised water (length: 20 km). So far the water was of destilled quality (< 6 µS/cm), which is the product evaporation and condensation of harbour surface water with the use of residual heat obtained from incineration of waste streams. As of 2010 the destilled water will be replaced by demineralised water, that will be produced in a more sustainable and reliable manner.
In 2008 work has started to erect the 1,400 m3/hr demineralised water plant (DWP; < 4 µS/cm) treating fresh surface water of the nearby Brielse Meer lake by means of a combination of membrane technology and ion exchange polishing. The plant will be erected in the Botlek area (site: Huntsman). The thus produced demineralised water will be fed into a distribution system (20 km length) to supply to various refineries and chemical companies. The water treatment facilities as well as the distribution network are owned by Evides Industriewater and are operated with own staff.
