AVEBE and North Water sign deal for new water treatment plant in Ter Apelkanaal (The Netherlands)
Last week AVEBE U.A. and North Water b.v. signed a contract for the construction of a new process water treatment plant at AVEBE´s site in Ter Apelkanaal. At this production site different starch products for use in the food industry are being produced on the basis of potato processing.
AVEBE decided to improve the quality of its process water that comes into contact with starch products within a number of processes. The company found in North Water an ideal partner to realise this plant. North Water is a joint venture
of Waterbedrijf Groningen, Evides Industriewater and Waterleidingmaatschappij Drenthe. The new treatment plant has a capacity of more than 600 m3 per hour and will produce approximately 3 million m3 process water annually. Tje investment in both process plant and infrastructure amounts to around 10 million Euro.
AVEBE is company, that as a result of the seasonal harvesting and processing of potatos experiences a surge of water usage during the so-called potato campaign that typically kicks-off in August each year. The new plant takes into account these substantial seasonal changes in capacity. The plant will be ready and commissioned before next year´s campaign (August 2009).
The process design is suited to deal with the primary source of water, the Stadskanaal. The final product will have a quality that almost equals that of drinking water. The process water will not only be used for the production of starch products, but serves as boiler feed water for the cogen and the steam turbines.
North Water will take care of the day-to-day operation of the plant.
